Redberry Lake Biosphere Reserve

Found in the Aspen Parkland, the Redberry Lake Biosphere Reserve received its UNESCO designation in 2000, covering 277,000 acres. In 2019, this was expanded to include the Redberry Lake watershed and surrounding lands, totaling to nearly 1,700,000 acres. One of only 19 across Canada, and the only one located in Saskatchewan, the Redberry Lake Biosphere is home to a variety of wildlife, including 189 species of birds. This area’s environment includes a saline lake, fresh water lakes, rolling prairies, and is dotted with ponds and swampy marshes. This region is important conservation site due to the abundance of wildlife and native plant species.

Possible Experiences in the Redberry Lake Biosphere Reserve

The Crooked Bush
Located between Hafford and Spears, the Crooked Bush is a grove of unusually twisted Aspen trees. Different from tyipcal aspens, there trees branches grow horizontally and downwards. This anomaly is though to be a genetic mutation, however the origins remain a mystery.
To get to the Crooked Bush, go 14.5 km W of Hafford on Hwy 40 (pass Speers to Flint Rd), 16 km N, then 2.5 km E. Watch for signs at Flint Rd and 16 km mark. This site is available to explore 24/7, year round.
